Each August, the Sofia Center for Professional Development at Bosque School designs and leads a weeklong orientation for Bosque’s fabulous faculty and staff. We launched the week on Monday with a welcome meeting for our 13 new colleagues and an evening of dinner and conversation for the entire faculty and staff which focused on our shared summer reading — #Edjourney: A Roadmap for the Future of Education by Grant Lichtman. The week has included learning rounds on technology, project-based learning, assessment and more, led by Bosque faculty; an energizing workshop on play led by guest presenters from the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Tricklock Company; time for grade-level teams and academic departments to work together; and brief, rejuvenating movement breaks that included a surrealist-inspired drawing exercise, a session on mindfulness in the classroom, and a drum circle!
While we are preparing for the arrival of students with great anticipation, our guiding through-line for the week has been an exploration of play. We have touched on the research about play and the brain and social development, deepened our understanding of the importance of play in the learning process, and practiced what is possible when we have a playful mindset open to growth and innovation. The north star of our week has been to be ready to welcome our students with joy, expertise, and care!
